SPD for Power Supply

SPD for Power Supply

Power surge protector, also known as the lightning protector, is suitable for AC 50/60HZ, rated voltage 220V/380V power supply system, to protect indirect lightning and direct lightning effects or other transient overvoltage surges, suitable for households The requirements for surge protection in residential, tertiary and industrial sectors include phase-to-phase, phase-to-earth, phase-to-neutral, neutral-to-earth, and combinations of protection modes. The power surge protector is usually connected in parallel to the circuit system. When lightning occurs, the high-intensity electromagnetic induction generated on the various metal pipes and wires entering the building will generate a large amount of pulse energy. The power surge protector will play a role in introducing the overcurrent to the earth and reducing the potential difference of each port of the device. It is suitable for transient overvoltage protection of 220/380V power supply and distribution systems. This product can effectively suppress induced overvoltage caused by lightning and system operation overvoltage, protect equipment safety, and ensure the normal operation of the system. Common surge protection devices: single or three-phase spd for power supply, generator surge arrester, and ups, PSU power surge protector. Surge Protection Device (SPD) for UPS and PSU Classification

According to the characteristics of the use of non-linear components, the surge protection equipment can be divided into:

  1. Voltage switch type SPD

Commonly used non-linear components include discharge gaps, gas discharge tubes, etc., which have the characteristics of large current capacity (nominal current and maximum current) and are especially suitable for lightning overvoltage protection (ie L PZ0A area).

  2. Voltage-limited SPD

Commonly used non-linear components include zinc oxide varistors, transient suppression diodes, etc., which are a large number of commonly used overvoltage protectors, which are generally suitable for indoor use (ie, L PZ0B, L PZ1, and L PZ2 zones).

  3. Combined SPD

The combination of voltage switching elements and voltage limiting elements. With different impulse voltage characteristics applied, the SPD sometimes exhibits switching SPD characteristics, sometimes it exhibits voltage limiting SPD characteristics, and sometimes it exhibits both characteristics at the same time.

Different phase of domestic surge protection devices

Single phase surge protector is suitable for AC 50/60HZ, rated voltage 220V to 380V power supply system (or communication system) to protect indirect lightning and direct lightning or other instantaneous overvoltage surge protection. It is suitable for the requirements of surge protection in family housing, tertiary industry and industrial fields. It has relative protection modes such as relative phase, relative middle line, middle line to ground and its combination. The protection flow is large, the residual pressure is extremely low, and the response time is fast. The latest arc extinguishing technology is adopted to avoid fire completely.

Three phase surge protector: A three-phase power system is a multiphase system that uses at least three "hot" conductors to transmit three different independent AC currents. The fluctuation of single-phase power system will also cause great fluctuation of voltage. Due to the offset characteristics of the three-phase power signal, these changes are minimized, thus improving the efficiency of the system. Due to the load balance, the three-phase power supply reduces the vibration of the generator and motor, and minimizes or eliminates the neutral line. The three-phase power system can create and control the rotating magnetic field, which simplifies the motor design. When the manufacturer believes that there is a risk of load imbalance, a fourth neutral wire is usually added.

How does a surge protection system work?

The surge protector consists of five parts: discharge gap, inflatable discharge tube, varistor, suppression diode and choke coil, which includes at least one nonlinear voltage limiting element. The following is how each component of spd power supply works.

1. Discharge gap. The discharge gap is generally composed of two metal rods exposed in the air separated by a certain gap. When the instantaneous overvoltage strikes, the gap is broken down and a part of the overvoltage charge is introduced into the earth to avoid the voltage rise on the protected equipment.

2. Gas discharge tube. The gas discharge tube is composed of a pair of cold cathode plates separated from each other and encapsulated in a glass tube or ceramic tube filled with a certain amount of inert gas (Ar).

In order to improve the trigger probability of the discharge tube, there is a co-trigger in the discharge tube.

This kind of inflatable discharge tube has a two-pole type and three-pole type.

3. Varistor. The main component of the varistor, the metal oxide semiconductor nonlinear resistor, is considered to be very sensitive to the voltage when the voltage at both ends of the varistor reaches a certain value. Its working principle is equivalent to the series-parallel connection of several semiconductors Pmurn.

4. Suppression diode. The suppression diode has the function of clamping and limiting voltage, and it works in the reverse breakdown zone. Because of its advantages of low clamping voltage and fast response, the suppression diode is especially suitable to be used as the last stage protection element in the multi-stage protection circuit.

5. Choke coil. The choke coil is a common-mode interference suppression device with ferrite as the magnetic core. it is symmetrically wound on the same ferrite annular core by two coils of the same size and the same number of turns to form a four-terminal device. it has a large inductance for the common-mode signal, but has little effect on the leakage inductance for the differential-mode signal.
